Spring Is Here. Is Dry Eye Making It Hard to Enjoy?

Dr. Erika Morrow, Author

Eye care tips in spring

Spring in Savannah is beautiful, but for many people, it also brings a frustrating mix of pollen, allergies, and itchy, unhappy eyes.

If your eyes have been feeling itchy, watery, red, or uncomfortable, you’re not alone! Dry eye and allergy season often go hand in hand. Even though watery eyes may seem like the opposite of dryness, irritation on the surface of the eye can actually trigger excess tearing, which is why so many people feel stuck in a cycle of discomfort this time of year. Want more information on treatment options? Click here.

The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference.

1. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes

I know it’s tempting, especially during allergy season, but rubbing your eyes usually makes symptoms worse. It can increase sensitivity, stir up inflammation, and leave your eyes feeling even more uncomfortable. If allergies are part of the problem, allergy eye drops can be a much better solution. Pataday can be a helpful option when used as directed. Pataday is available in-office at ForSight!

2. Wear Sunglasses Outside

Sunglasses aren’t just for style! They also help protect your eyes from pollen, dust, and wind, all of which can make dry eye symptoms worse.

Think of them as a barrier between your eyes and everything floating around outside this time of year. A good pair of sunglasses can go a long way in helping your eyes feel more comfortable while you’re out and about.

3. Soothe and Hydrate

One of the best things you can do during allergy season is keep your eyes hydrated.

Preservative free artificial tears can help flush out allergens and give your eyes some much needed relief. They’re especially helpful when your eyes feel dry, tired, or irritated after being outdoors. At ForSight, we carry the OPTASE Dry Eye Kit, which is a great option for patients looking for extra support this season. The OPTASE Dry Eye Kit is available in-office at ForSight.

Don’t Ignore Ongoing Eye Discomfort

If your eyes are bothering you day after day, it may be more than just a little seasonal irritation. Dry eye can have a real impact on how your eyes feel, how well you see, and how comfortable you are throughout the day.

If you’re dealing with dryness, irritation, or allergy related eye symptoms, stop by and see us. We’d love to help you find the right products and the right support for your eyes this spring.
