Anti-reflective coating, sometimes called AR coating or anti-glare coating, is a thin treatment applied to the surfaces of an eyeglass lens. Its purpose is to reduce the reflections created when light hits the lens.

Every lens reflects some light. You may notice these reflections when driving past headlights, sitting beneath bright indoor lighting, looking at a computer screen, taking a photograph, or having a conversation with someone. Anti-reflective coating reduces those distracting reflections so that more light can pass through the lenses. The result can be clearer, more comfortable vision, particularly in situations involving bright lights or strong contrast.

The coating does not change your prescription. Instead, it improves how your lenses manage light.

The greatest difference is not a change in magnification or prescription strength, but rather the reduction of visual interruptions. With fewer reflections, your lenses may feel clearer in changing light conditions. Headlights and streetlights can appear less distracting, while bright indoor lighting may create fewer visible reflections across the lens.

Anti-reflective coating also changes how your glasses look to other people. Because there is less reflected light covering the lenses, your eyes remain more visible. It’s important, however, to distinguish anti-reflective coating from blue-light filtering. Anti-reflective treatment focuses on reflections at the surface of the lens. Blue-light filtering is a separate lens feature intended to reduce selected wavelengths of visible light. For people experiencing computer-related discomfort, an accurate prescription, an appropriate working distance, regular breaks, and good lighting, may be just as important as the lenses themselves.
